Athletic 27 Amman United 11 (Two West)

South Gower Youth 5  Athletic Youth 31

Match Report - Athletic v Amman Utd.

Following a demanding yet encouraging pre season this was an eagerly awaited first league fixture against a team who were undefeated last season.

The home side started positively, accurate positional kicking by outside half Tom Gravel kept Amman pinned down in their 22 where inevitably they conceded a penalty at a break down and Gravel opened the scoring with a well judged kick. Although the Red and Blacks were having the majority of possession the Amman back line were dangerously creative. It took some determined tackling by centres Aled Jones and Dan Davies together with winger Gethin Philips to keep them at bay.

The first try of the game came via a sweeping move by the home team backs, winger Josh Watson was prominent with his speed and elusive running to make the initial line break and the movement was finished off by scrum half and captain Carwyn Thomas. At this stage of the game the Athletic dominance was rewarded with another try scored by Robbie Thomas convertd by Tom Gravel. The visitors were always going to be competitive and during a rare excursion into Red and Black territory impressive scrum half Joel Foster kicked a penalty and as half time approached Amman wre unlucky not to score when winger Shane Edwards was held up over the line.

For the first ten minutes of the second half Amman were on top territorialy aided by the home side being reluctant to clear their line. Relief came in the form of an impressive team effort resulting in a second try for Robbie Thomas again converted by Tom Gravel. Joel Foster kicked anther penalty for Amman as they continued to show commendable team spirit in trying to prevent further scoring. A fourth bonus point try was scored in the corner by Gethin Phillips after a delightful off load from full back Robbie Thomas. Amman had the final say with a well worked try which proved to be the last play of a very good match.

The Red and Blacks front row of Dafydd Bowen, Paul Gravel and James Newnian were formidable at the scrum, the young second row pairing of Rhydian Walters andCarwyn Bebb were prominent in both tight and loose play and the back row of Richard Bloomfield, Callum Evans and Dan Evans provided the aggressive continuity for the type of rugby that the Red  and Blacks will want to play for the rest of the season.

NEXT WEEK THE RED and BLACKS are away to FISHGUARD and GODWICK.
