WRU National League Division 2 West

MUMBLES 20 ATHLETIC 32

Conditions were perfect at Underhill Park for a treat of running rugby. The sun drenched pitch was however cooled with a tricky cross wind which no doubt helped the players tolerate a fast paced match.

Mumbles were first out of the blocks after just minutes when they broke through to score a well taken try under the posts. The kick was converted and home side led by seven. Both sides battled for the next twenty minutes until the much changed Athletic side scored a lovely try after an angled run by centre Wayne Rice saw him cross under the sticks. Brad Roderick added the kick to tie the scores seven all. From the kick off Mumbles mounted a series of attacks which resulted in a successful penalty kick at goal. That was the final score of the half as the home side led 10-7.

The second half saw the Red & Blacks go up a gear and just three minutes into play, flanker Robbie Thomas showed terrific acceleration to beat the defence to score near the posts. Fly half Roderick added the extras. A penalty by Mumbles reduced their deficit to just one point as the visitors hung on to a slender 14-13 lead. One again, Athletic mounted the pressure and were rewarded with two tries in quick succession by Brad Roderick and captain Dan Evans in the same corner of the field. Roderick was successful with the conversion of his own try & narrowly missed with his second touchline attempt. With just ten minutes left the visitors looked comfortable until Mumbles went over for their second converted try. The scores were a tighter 26-20 to Athletic but a further two penalties by Brad Roderick made the final score 32-20 to the visitors.

This was the fifth consecutive bonus point win for the Red & Blacks who finished the season on 67 points and fourth placed in the table. Just reward for their fine form in the last two months - losing just one game (by two points) in the last ten fixtures.

Carmarthenshire Youth Play-off Shield

ST CLEARS YOUTH 10 ATHLETIC YOUTH 24

Many congratulations to Athletic Youth who lifted the Shield at Parc Griffith Jones today. A very entertaining match, credit to both sides, but victory for the Red & Blacks secured the trophy to end their season in style. Well done to skipper Jack Hannington and his players and also to coaches Dai Lewis & Jamie Singer for their dedication throughout a difficult season.
