WRU National League Division 2 West

ATHLETIC 13 PONTYBEREM 15

In lovely spring sunshine, Athletic welcomed high flyers Pontyberem to Athletic Park for a much anticipated derby match. The visitors were pushing for promotion with just three games remaining.

The Red & Blacks dominated possession and territory in the first half and would rue at least two missed try scoring opportunities. Instead they had to settle for two well struck penalties by stand off Bradley Roderick to lead 6-0. In a rare late foray into the home 22, the visitors scored a vital corner try to narrow the score and give Athletic a slender 6-5 interval lead.

A twenty minute 'purple patch' where Pontyberem dominate proceedings saw them take the lead 6-15 with a well worked converted try and a penalty. The final five minutes of the game proved to be nail biting after young Bradley Roderick intercepted a pass to score under the sticks. His conversion took the the score to 13-15. This proved to be the final score of a pulsating game and we wish Pontyberem well with their promotion ambitions.

We have five games remaining in this campaign starting with another home fixture next Saturday against Tycroes. Please come down and support the boys.
