U15s lift regional cup at Parc y Scarlets

Sunday 13th May, 2.15pm kick off

SCARLETS REGIONAL CUP FINAL, PARC Y SCARLETS, LLANELLI

ATHLETIC U15s 15 vs TENBY U15s 11

Both clubs should be immensely proud of the performance of their teams in this prestigious show piece final at the home of the Scarlets. There was plenty of talent on show from the Red & Blacks and the Seasiders, as both sets of youngsters gave their all in a fully committed and gritty display which went down to the wire.

Tenby opened the scoring with a well struck penalty kick which was countered minutes later, by a similar strike from Athletic full back Iwan Glynn. The play see sawed back and forth, with a number of handling errors creeping into the play of both sides which was to be expected during such a big occasion. During a foray into Athletic's 22, a penalty was awarded for off side and Tenby duly regained the lead 3-6. From the restart, the Red & Blacks mounted a series of attacks in their opponents territory and from an attacking scrum, No 8 & captain Scott Davies picked up at the base and ran to the blind side to score a well worked try. Iwan Glynn narrowly missed the conversion from wide out. Although the big Tenby forwards enjoyed the lions share of line out possession, Athletic were quicker to the breakdown in loose play where the back row of Steffan Jones, Ryan King and skipper Scott Davies were outstanding. Athletic went into the interval with an 8-6 advantage.

Athletic coach Lee 'Fuzzy' Davies was true to his word, promising all his squad players at least half a game when he made multiple changes for the second period. Tenby started the second half with intent, as their stand off made a beautiful break from his own half, evading two would be tacklers on his charge into Athletic's 22, although tackled he managed to off load a try scoring pass to his support runner for a well executed score. The conversion attempt failed and Tenby went ahead 8-11. The Athletic responded with a pressure try of their own, as Tenby tried to run the ball from within their own half, a handling error enable the Athletic to pounce and two deft kicks and a favourable bounce allowed winger Elis Nichols to gather and touch down between the uprights. Iwan Glynn added the extras to make the score 15-11. The remaining ten minutes saw the Athletic camped in Tenby's 22 as they lay siege on the try line, Tenby's defence however held firm and finally managed to clear their lines and mount a final challenge into Athletic territory. The Red & Blacks were not to be denied and held out for the final whistle to the joy and relief of family and supporters.

Many congratulations to the Under 15s who added the Scarlets Region Cup to the Scarlets Carmarthenshire Cup which they won last month.
