PEMBROKE 26 ATHLETIC 10

On a perfect playing surface at Crickmarren Field, the home side avenged and reversed an almost identical scoreline (27-11) when both teams played at Athletic Park last September.

The Red & Blacks competed well in the first half and looked dangerous in attack despite falling behind to a penalty by home stand off Toby Smith in the first five minutes.

Sustained pressure culminated in a fine try for winger Josh Watson who was making his first appearance of the season, the touchline conversion was superbly added by Tom Gravell. Within minutes stand off Gravell landed a 35 metre penalty to extend the visitors lead to 3-10. The final ten minutes of the half belonged to the Reds as they scored two unconverted tries in quick succession through centre Fraser James and winger Sean Dalling. Pembroke held a 13-10 interval lead.

Athletic were out of sorts in the second half as Pembroke were far quicker to the breakdown and solid in defence. Too many missed first time tackles resulted in the homesters scoring another couple of tries via former Athletic player, stand off Toby Smith and centre Dan Colley. Smith added a penalty to take the final score to 26-10.

Three yellow cards made the task much more difficult for the Red & Blacks and Pembroke took full advantage to bag the points.
