WRU National League Division 2 West

ATHLETIC 22 TUMBLE 17

A fourth consecutive league victory for the Red & Blacks was the reward for a tough, bruising meeting with close neighbours Tumble RFC at Athletic Park.

In a mirror image of last Saturday's match away to Llanybydder, the Magpies proved to be very resilient and tackled with tenacity throughout. Athletic were prominant in the scrummages but line out possesion was a more equally fought contest. Some clever distribution by Tumble pivot Steve Hewitt created a variety of options for his attacking team mates, but the home side's defence held firm with some bruising tackling. On 35 minutes, Athletic centre Aled Jones was sent to the 'sin bin' for an over vigorous tackle on his opposite number.

Although enjoying plentiful possession, Athletic held a narrow 7-0 interval lead thanks to a well taken try by scrum half Nick Rees which was converted by Josh Watson.

After five minutes of the restart, a sustained period of pressure saw the home side rewarded with a try under the posts by full back Watson who also converted to stretch the lead to 14-0. After a twenty minute period of shared possession, Tumble hit back with a converted try of their own after a clever chip kick into the Athletic 22 by Hewitt. Once again the Athletic responded swiftly with a determined try by captain Carwyn Thomas which was converted by Josh Watson. The score was now 19-7 but the visitors weren't finished as they scored a second try in the corner, the conversion was superbly struck from the touchline by captain Hewitt. In the remaining five minutes a penalty apiece brought the final score to 22-17.

Congratulations to Athletic captain Carwyn Thomas & his squad for a successful season over all, as they look to finish in a respectable fifth placed position in the league table.
