WRU Specsavers National Plate Competition

ATHLETIC 3 NEWBRIDGE 29

On a dank autumnal day, the Red & Blacks welcomed last season's Championship side Newbridge RFC to Athletic Park. The final scoreline does not reflect the competitive nature of the match and credit must go to the home side for a gutsy performance, especially in the rough & tumble of the forwards battle.

To put it into perspective, the main difference between the sides was that Newbridge were far more clinical in finishing opportunities that came their way. Athletic 'knocked on the door' for long periods and will rue missed chances to keep the score board ticking. The first twenty minutes belonged to the Red & Blacks as they built continueous attacks in the opponents territory, the only reward was a single penalty kick by Tom Gravell to lead 3-0. The visitors ventured into the home half and after a few phases, left wing Jimmy Gahan stepped on the gas to evade several would be tacklers to score a fine individual try under the sticks. Stand off Ben Murphy added the extras. Just five minutes later, Gahan was once more instrumental, running off his wing through midfield to give a try scoring pass to fellow winger Sam Watkins. The conversion failed and the visitors led 3-12 at the break.

After the interval, things continued in the same vein as play 'see-sawed' between both halves of the pitch. Athletic continued to pressurise in the visitors 22 but determined Newbridge defence held firm. The visitors further stretched their lead with a penalty by Murphy. On fifteen minutes, strong running & interpassing by Newbridge backs saw centre Mathew McGevern cross for a well executed try, Murphy added the conversion to extend the lead to 3-22. Camped in the visitors 22 for the final seven minutes, Athletic just could not cross for that consolation but deserved try. During the last minute of play, Newbridge once more broke out of defence to hammer home the final nail, scoring a try via centre Robbie Turley. Murphy's extras brought the final whistle and a 3-29 victory.

Congratulations to Newbridge on a deserved win and good luck in the next round.

NEWCASTLE EMLYN YOUTH 15 ATHLETIC YOUTH 19

Athletic Youth leap frogged Lampeter Youth to sit proudly at the top of the table after today's excellent win at Emlyn. Never an easy place to go, this was a very good victory for a young Red & Blacks side on their travels. Tries by Iwan Glynn (2) & Josh Witney with two conversions by Glynn secured the points.
