Final pre season match

Pre Season friendly warm up game

ATHLETIC 12 PENYGROES 17

Despite several senior players being unavailable, the squad had a useful run out against a well organised Penygroes side.

Determined defence by both teams ensured that the whitewash would not be crossed too often. It took twenty minutes for the first score to arrive & that went to the visitors after a smartly taken five metre 'tap & go' penalty. The conversion was succesful to give Penygroes a 0-7 lead. From the restart, Athletic gained possession and a barnstorming run by lock Carwyn Bebb from forty metres resulted in a fine individual try, the conversion failed. The home side looked particularly strong in the scrummage set piece but all other aspects of forward play were evenly contested. The final five minutes of the half saw sustained pressure in the home half of the field which resulted in a slick threequarter handling and a deserved try for the visitors. The conversion was once more successful and they led 5-14 at the break.

The second period continued very much in the same vein as neither side conceded much territory. Penygroes did extend their lead mid way through with a penalty for off side. The final say went Athletic No 8 Jamie Williams as he crashed over under the sticks, Scott Maynard added the extra's to conclude the scoring for the day.

We wish centre Wayne Rice a speedy recovery after sustaining a Grade 2 MCL knee injury during the match.

Next Saturday, the 1st XV travel to Burry Port for the first league game of the season while the Druids embark on a new adventure in the newly formed Conference West, at home against Felinfoel 2nds. We appreciate your support at either game.
