From the archive: 1975-6 Athletic Youth

The 1975-76 Athletic Youth team was one of the best in the history of the Club. Here, they are pictured before the Llanelli & District Youth Cup Final held at Kidwelly against Llanelli RFC Youth. The Scarlets contained a number of future senior stars including Welsh Triple Crown winner Phil May. Unconcerned, the young Red & Blacks showed grit & determination to lift the trophy.

During the season, the Youth amassed a remarkable total of 1,054 points scored (an average of 31 points per game), with notable individual contributions by Outside Half & prolific place kicker Robbie Jones bagging 355 points and flying wing Michael Langdon touching down for 40 tries. They won 32 from 34 games played which was a fitting memorial to Captain Gino Dragone who sadly died at such an early age.

They narrowly (& controversially) lost 3-0 in the semi final of the Welsh Youth Cup. What seemed a perfectly legitimate winning try was ruled out by the referee to deny the talented team a showdown with local rivals Quins Youth in the final.

Towards the end of the season, No.8 Derek Evans won the first of his Welsh Youth caps as Captain of the National Team and Huw Jones gained his U-16 Schoolboy cap.
