Aberavon Quins 26 Athletic 7

A squad of 22 players travelled to Aberavon Quins last Saturday for a pre season friendly. This was an opportunity for many of the younger players in the squad to show their mettle in front of tne new coaching team of Mike King and Gareth Rees. The absence of many of the more physical squad players, meant this was going to be a challenging encounter against a robust home team.

Despite enjoying terretorial advantage during the first half, it was the home side who scored three tries in a ten minute spell leading up to half time. There were many pleasing aspects of the Red and Black play, however, converting pressure into points was clearly missing.

The second half saw a reversal of the first, with the hosts dominating territory. The visitors defence was organised and resolute, which resulted in just one try being conceded during this period. When in the attacking third, the Red and Blacks began to look threatening and were eventually rewarded with a try from James Newnian.

The game proved to be a positive exercise, with many fringe players given game time.

The next friendly is at home to Tumble on Thursday 22nd August. Kick off is at 7.15pm.
