Saturday's result

WRU National League Division 2 West

TENBY UNITED 52 ATHLETIC 35

A sun bathed Heywood Lane was the venue for this Easter Saturday cracker! A young Athletic side missing seven of their usual squad players travelled to title contenders Tenby in no doubt of the difficulty of the task that lay ahead.

And so it proved, with the home side dominating the first quarter and racing to a 21 - nil lead courtesy of their speedy & experienced threequarters who crosed for three converted tries. The next period saw sustained pressure from the Red & Blacks in the Tenby 22, but it was Tenby who broke away to score their bonus fourth try of the half. Athletic responded with a deserved try of their own and continued to pressurise their hosts. However, what seemed like a try scoring pass was intercepted by a Tenby defender who ran the length of the field to cross under the posts, making the half time score 33 - 7

The signs looked ominous for the rest of the match as Tenby started the second period in the same fashion as they did in the first half by scoring two tries in quick succession. The score was now 45 - 7 to the homesters. For the next thirty plus minutes the Athletic dominated territory and scored four blistering tries of their own to get to within ten points with a 45 - 35 scoreline. The last word belonged to the 'Seasiders' as they capitalised on a defensive mix up to get the final score of the match.

Many teams would have buckled having been so many points adrift but the character & never say die attitude of this Athletic side is to be commended. They scored five tries and earned themselves a bonus point for their efforts. This match was a fantastic advert for the best of community rugby played in front of a large & appreciative crowd.

Next Saturday 22nd April, the Red & Blacks travel to Pontyberem for their final game of the season.
