WRU Specsavers National League Division 2 West

ATHLETIC 19 MUMBLES 15

Threatening winter rain clouds hovered above Athletic Park as the Red & Blacks welcomed third placed Mumbles to Carmarthen.

Fortunately, it remained dry until the final five minutes of an enthralling 2 West league game.

The homesters were in control territorially for most of the contest, but the visitors looked sharp in the threequarter line when given the opportunity.

The game was stalement for the first 20 minutes before Athletic scrum half Matt Evans made an incisive break from a rolling maul, to score a lovely individual try. Liam Price added the conversion to give the Red & Blacks a 7-0 lead. Just two minutes later an indiscrection provided 3 points for Mumbles via the boot of full back C. Morgan. Play continued to see-saw for the remainder of the half when left wing J. Rimmel hared in for a well taken score on 38 minutes. The conversion attempt failed. A couple of minutes later, Liam Price added a penalty to give the home side a slender 10-8 interval lead.

Just three minutes into the second period, Price stepped up to stroke a fine penalty from 40 metres to extend the lead to 13-8. The visitors backline always looked dangerous and from an attacking position on Athletic's 22, centre C. Richards found a huge gap opening in front of him & duly capitalised by scoring his sides second try. Morgan added the extras to give Mumbles a 15-13 lead.

Four chances to cross the line were missed by Athletic as they tried hard to turn pressure into points. But they were finally rewarded with two further penalty kicks from the reliable boot of Price to seal the game and cap a fine overall team performance.

We now look forward to next week's arrival of undefeated league leaders Burry Port to Athletic Park. It will be a big game & Athletic will be keen to reverse the 25-19 defeat at the hands of the 'Blacks' in September.

Youth Friendly Match

ATHLETIC YOUTH 18 MORRISTON YOUTH 8

This friendly saw the coming together of two highly successful Youth teams who top their respective divisions. Athletic in the Scarlets Region West Carmarthenshire League & Morriston in the Ospreys Region Division A League.

The game was nip & tuck throughout with some talented youngsters on show. It was the second period when the home side began to dominate proceedings and deservedly get the result 18-8. Jacob Davies scored two tries and Tom Davies added two penalties & a conversion for the junior Red & Blacks.

Both clubs should be very proud of the array of talented youngsters at their disposal - well done to all!
