ATHLETIC PARK

On Friday 28th. August 2009 a new chapter was written into the history of Carmarthen Athletic when Mr. Dennis Gethin (President of the WRU) officially opened the new clubhouse & ground complex at Athletic Park. Mr. Gethin was full of praise for the hard working committee men and volunteers who had contributed so much towards the superb facilities now afforded to playing and social members alike. He went on to say that the facilities at Athletic Park were amongst the best of their kind of any club of equal status in Wales. He congratulated all concerned for their continued dedication in promoting the game of rugby football in Carmarthen and west Wales. He then presented a 2009 British & Irish Lions shirt signed by the entire playing & management staff on behalf of tour manager Gerald Davies along with his good wishes to the club (Gerald had originally agreed to perform the opening of the complex but withdrew due to a family commitment). The President then unveiled the commemorative welsh slate plaque to warm applause.

A large crowd was present to witness Rev. Father Phil Jones (club chaplain & vicar of Llansteffan) give a moving blessing on the pitch flanked by officials and players from the Athletic and West Wales XV's. An exciting match followed to commemorate the occasion and fittingly the Red & Black's were victorious by 37 points to 7 points.

The completion of the clubhouse was the fifth phase of the development of the ground after the changing rooms block, floodlighting, indoor training barn and grandstand. 2013 saw the partial tarring of the car parking area and 2014 will see the erection of a new WC block adjoining the indoor barn and the completion of resurfacing of the road and car park area at the top end of the site.

The club has always been progressive and has a proud tradition of developing facilities. The first clubhouse was built in Friars Park and waste land at Five Fields was levelled & developed into two rugby pitches, a grandstand & changing rooms, two squash courts and a cricket square. Also, two separate extensions (Function room & Sponsors lounge) were added to the original clubhouse.

This club will always look to improve facilities for the future benefit of all young people in Carmarthen and surrounding district.
