Gentle giant, a tribute to Ieuan Jenkins

The Club is profoundly saddened to learn of the passing of former Captain, Trustee, Patron & Life Member Ieuan Jenkins. He passed away peacefully last Saturday, 8th October at the great age of 92 years.

He started and ended his playing career at the Athletic. His first appearance was in 1947 before conscription for National Service at the age of 19 years. On his return to Carmarthen he played for neighbours Carmarthen Quins, featuring in their West Wales Cup winning side in 1955-1956 season. He also represented the Carmarthenshire County and Welsh Civil Service XV's. He returned to Athletic to Captain the 1st XV in consecutive seasons, 1957-1958 and 1958-1959 and continued playing for the Red & Blacks until finally hanging up his boots in 1965. He went on to coach the 1st & Druids XV's for a number of seasons in the 1980's. Well respected and revered by the players, Ieuan's committment and dedication to the cause was without question. His brother Henry also played for the Club back in the day.

He was a GIANT on the field of play and a GENTLE GIANT off it. His softly spoken happy demeanor, tinged with a wicked sense of humour, made Ieuan a very popular man in his sporting, public and working life.

A life long Athletic member, the Club reciprocated by bestowing the highest honour of Life Membership to a man who had long served the Club in differing capacities over many years. He was also appointed a Trustee for many years, which confirmed the respect that he richly deserved among the Membership.

The Club meant the world to Ieuan right to the end. Recently he said that: 'The Athletic had given him so much and that he felt lucky to have had it in his life. It had given him sport, fun but more important than that, friendships that had lasted a lifetime'. A fitting & moving testimony from a great man.

Our deepest condolences are extended to Ieuan's daughters Jean, Sue & husband John, brother Henry and the wider family. Our thoughts are very much with them at this sad time.

Funeral Arrangements

After a Private Service at Llanelli Crematorium, the Public Funeral Service for Ieuan will take place at St Peter's Church, Carmarthen at 11.30 am on Monday 24th October. A reception venue for the gathering of family & friends has yet to be confirmed. We shall announce the venue on our Twitter Account when confirmed.

I was taught so much and guided by Ieuan when he was my boss for many years in GPO/BT. Things that have helped me ever since. He was always firm but fair, encouraging and always willing to help others. A leader on and off the field and great company whenever you met him. A gentle giant and a wonderful human being who we will always remember fondly. RIP Ieuan!!!
